Artist Spotlight: Meet Chong-a Hwang-A Visionary in Fabric Design

When it comes to bold color, expressive style, and imaginative detail, Chong-A Hwang is a name that stands out in the quilting and textile design world. But her journey as an artist began long before her fabrics made their way into quilt shops around the globe.

Raised in a family of artists in South Korea, Chong-A’s creative spark was ignited early. As a young girl, she was often seen trailing behind her father with a paintbrush in hand, eager to mimic his artistic movements and soak up inspiration from every corner of her home.

That early passion blossomed into a distinguished artistic career. Chong-A earned her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from Sook Myung University in Seoul, where she received formal training that would lay the foundation for her work in textile design.

Today, she lives and works in the heart of New York City, calling the vibrant and contemporary neighborhood of Chelsea in Manhattan her home. When she’s not designing eye-catching fabrics for quilters and makers, she’s exploring the art galleries, boutique shops, and culinary gems that line the streets of her neighborhood.

Chong-A also treasures her time with her two grown children, Laura and Sean, who live nearby in NYC. Whether she’s cooking a favorite dish, visiting a new gallery, or simply walking through Chelsea’s creative corridors, Chong-A is always immersed in the artistic energy that fuels her work. Many of Chong-A’s fabric collections are known for their painterly effects, metallic accents, and modern florals—making them favorites for both traditional and contemporary quilt projects.
