Frank Lloyd Wright
A pioneer of American modernism. Wright began his career in the 1880s during the heyday of the Arts and Crafts movement. Its embrace of natural materials and fine handwork are reflected in Wright's highly embellished early work, The House Beautiful. As he launched his independent career, he became the preeminent developer and practitioner of the distinctly American prairie style, highlighting the simple geometric basis of nature. As Wright's style matured, it demonstrated a broader, more sweeping approach, reducing decorative design to abstracted beauty characterized by line, shape, light and space through a blend of modern and traditional materials, which will eventually go on to shape Mid-Century, modern ideals.
In 1927 Frank Lloyd Wright designed a series of 12 seasonally themed monthly covers for Liberty magazine. The magazine deemed the covers too avant-garde and returned them to Wright. Each design of the Liberty magazine covers is an example of Wright's practice of using the tools of his trade, a t-square, triangle and compass, to create lively geometric designs. Cloud nine's adaptation of March Balloons adapts Wright's well known illustration into a dynamic and fluid pattern, perfect for your quilting adventures.
