Artist Spotlight: Meet Chong-a Hwang-A the Artist Behind the Sparkle

When it comes to bold color, graceful florals, and that unmistakable shimmer of imagination, Chong-A Hwang is a designer who truly knows how to make fabric sing. Her work has a way of catching your eye — and then your heart — with its blend of painterly detail and modern elegance.

But long before her beautiful designs began appearing in quilt shops around the world, Chong-A’s story began in South Korea, in a home filled with creativity. She grew up surrounded by art — literally! Her father was an artist, and little Chong-A was often right behind him, paintbrush in hand, eager to learn and create. That love of color and form has been with her ever since.

After earning her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from Sook Myung University in Seoul, Chong-A built a career that blends fine art with textile design — a perfect match for her expressive, painterly style.

These days, she calls Chelsea, Manhattan home — one of New York City’s most vibrant and art-filled neighborhoods. When she’s not designing her next collection, you might find her wandering through local galleries, popping into a boutique, or savoring a delicious meal at a tucked-away café. Her two grown children, Laura and Sean, also live nearby, and she cherishes every moment spent with them.
