Nestled in a wildly eclectic studio in the foothills of Washington State’s Cascade Mountains, self-taught artist Aimee Stewart has been weaving dreams into digital form since 2008. Artist Spotlight: Meet Chong-a Hwang-A the Artist Behind the Sparkle
When it comes to bold color, graceful florals, and that unmistakable shimmer of imagination, Chong-A Hwang is a designer who truly knows how to make fabric sing. Her work has a way of catching your eye — and then your heart — with its blend of painterly detail and modern elegance.
But long before her beautiful designs began appearing in quilt shops around the world, Chong-A’s story began in South Korea, in a home filled with creativity. She grew up surrounded by art — literally! Her father was an artist, and little Chong-A was often right behind him, paintbrush in hand, eager to learn and create. That love of color and form has been with her ever since.
After earning her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from Sook Myung University in Seoul, Chong-A built a career that blends fine art with textile design — a perfect match for her expressive, painterly style.
These days, she calls Chelsea, Manhattan home — one of New York City’s most vibrant and art-filled neighborhoods. When she’s not designing her next collection, you might find her wandering through local galleries, popping into a boutique, or savoring a delicious meal at a tucked-away café. Her two grown children, Laura and Sean, also live nearby, and she cherishes every moment spent with them.
Every piece Chong-A creates carries a bit of that artistic energy — from metallic gold highlights that glint like sunlight on petals to lush florals that feel alive with color. Tula Pink Untamed
Tula Pink wears a lot of hats—illustrator, fabric designer, quilter, author, maker—and honestly, just an all-around good human who never minds talking about herself (and does it with plenty of charm).
She studied at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, which was great… except for the whole “broke artist” thing. So, Tula decided it was time for a paycheck. She tried her hand as an exhibit designer for museums in Southern California (quiet, maybe a little too quiet), then jumped into the music industry. After five years of blasting her eardrums, she packed it up, left California, and headed east. The plan? Keep moving until she found a place she liked. The reality? She ran out of gas money halfway there and figured, “Eh, good enough!” So, she stayed.
Now Tula lives just outside Kansas City, MO, in a quirky little house that used to be a barn (and still looks like one, depending on the angle). Her true passion—and main purpose in life—is fabric design. She’s all about it. Her colorful, whimsical, and sometimes mischievous patterns show up everywhere: fabric, ribbons, paper products, needlepoint kits, embroidery patterns, even sewing machines. Fans know her for her playful sense of humor, her knack for tucking hidden animals into unexpected places, and her fearless approach to color and pattern. She follows the “more is more” philosophy—because really, who wants to stop at just enough?
These days, Tula collaborates with FreeSpirit Fabrics to create multiple collections each year, partners with Aurifil Threads and Renaissance Ribbons, writes quilting and sewing books with F+W Media, and proudly represents BERNINA sewing machines as an Ambassador. She’s happiest in her studio, designing from morning until night—just don’t ask her to step away from her work or whether “Tula Pink” is really her name. (Spoiler: she gets cranky.)
