Introducing Thirty-One

A milestone collection — and a number worth celebrating. It started with a casual question from a fellow Benartex designer to Nadelstern — one of those offhand remarks you don't expect to set off a chain of thought. She asked how many collections she'd designed for Benartex over the years. Paula wasn't sure, so she sat down and counted. The answer? Thirty.

Thirty collections. Nearly four decades of collaboration with a company she loves, working in the design language that has always felt most like her — kaleidoscopic color, intricate symmetry, patterns that reward a second look and a third. That's a lineage worth honoring.

So when it came time to name the next collection, there was really only one answer. What else could it be but Thirty-One?

31: a number with personality

1-It's prime. Thirty-one is a prime number — divisible only by itself and 1. Fittingly independent, entirely its own thing.

2-One billion seconds. There are one billion seconds in 31 years. Let that sink in. That's how long Paula has been making patterns with Benartex.

3-Baskin-Robbins' magic number. In Japan (and elsewhere), Baskin-Robbins is known as "31 Flavors" — because there are always 31 different flavors on offer at any given time. Paula likes to think her colorways have that same spirit of delicious variety.

4-The Cyrillic alphabet. Russian, Belarusian, and Bulgarian are all written in the Cyrillic alphabet — which has exactly 31 letters. A whole language encoded in 31 symbols.

5-"Dressed to the 31s." In English, we say "dressed to the nines" to mean supremely well turned out. In French, the equivalent expression uses the number 31 instead. Naturally, Paula found the French version more compelling.

The collection itself is a 12-SKU group built around three patterns, each offered in four colorways. Every design brings together the symmetry, intricacy, and abundant color that define Paula's personal quilt idiom. Nadelstern poured herself into these patterns — and you can feel it.

She is, without apology, a Patternista. This collection makes that claim with full confidence.

Part of Paula Nadelstern's landmark Thirty-One collection for Benartex, Wingspan is a stunning showcase of her signature kaleidoscopic design aesthetic. Rendered in a rich palette of blues and coordinating multicolors, this print plays with light and symmetry to produce the illusion of sweeping, luminous wings in motion. The complex, almost psychedelic patterns captivate the viewer, with organic shapes and stylized forms seeming to move in an endless dance, creating fascinating depth and vibrancy. The symmetrical arrangement of elements creates a feeling of harmony and balance. The colors are, ochre gold, marigold, turquoise, cobalt blue, amethyst, and azure blue, on a black background, creating a striking contrast perfect for kaleidoscope quilting.
