"When I was a child, I believed that every hill I saw was simply where a dinosaur lay down and died, and then grass grew over it. I have no idea where this information came from, but to my 6-year-old mind, this was a flawless piece of logic. I used to look out the window and try to guess which kind of dinosaur each hill was hiding while checking my children's encyclopedia of pre-historic animals. I was pretty good at it, considering this was my own theory, I was correct 100% of the time. As an adult, the dinosaur wing is still my first stop at the Natural History Museum. Dinosaurs are amazing and huge and mysterious. They lived tens of millions of years ago and the fascination with these giant creatures still exists today. Is it their size? Definitely. Is it about how differently they moved and lived? For sure. Is it how little we still know about them and the world they existed in? Absolutely. Everything that I do as a fabric designer is about indulging my childhood fantasies. I try to hold on to all of the things that we so easily let go of as we grow up, like wonder, amazement, creative logic, and delight. Typically, dinosaur fabrics are for children; I don't know who made that decision, but I wildly disagree. Roar! is a whimsical take on fancy dinosaurs for those of us who keep one foot firmly planted in fantasy. My pre-historic landscape is drenched in details and color. Here you will find a sophisticated T-Rex in a topiary, A Triceratops out for a stroll on a windy parkway path, happy little hidden Raptors in a dainty damask, and Pterodactyls taking time to smell the flowers. Emery Walker

Emery Walker played a pivotal role in William Morris' life, serving as both a close friend and a significant influence. Born in Paddington in 1851 and later relocating to Hammersmith, Walker embarked on a career in the printing industry in 1873, eventually co-founding the renowned engraving company, 'Walker and Boutall Automatic and Photographic Engravers', alongside Walker Boutall. Their innovative techniques revolutionized book illustration, integrating photographs and artworks seamlessly.

Morris held Walker in high regard, considering a day incomplete without a glimpse of his friend. While Morris is renowned primarily for his poetry, it was Walker who spurred him to delve into the world of publishing. Inspired by Walker's vision and expertise, Morris established the Kelmscott Press in 1891, dedicated to producing limited-edition illustrated books. This venture became a passion for Morris until his passing in 1896.

Though Emery Walker may be less familiar to many, he was a luminary within the Arts & Crafts movement, actively involved in organizations such as The Art Workers' Guild and The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. His contributions to the printing industry and his friendship with Morris left an indelible mark on both their lives and on the artistic landscape of Britain.

Paula Nadelstern

Paula Nadelstern makes quilts on the same block in the Bronx in New York where she grew up. Her Kaleidoscope quilts merge magic with light, color and motion. Paula's books, Kaleidoscopes & Quilts and Snowflakes & Quilts were published by C&T Publishing. She is an author, teacher, quiltmaker and textile designer.

She settled into full-time quiltmaking by way of the playground park bench. That's where city moms on hiatus from previous careers hung out and shared ideas--like organizing quilt novices into making a raffle quilt for a local cooperative nursery. One good quilt led to another and another. By the time she gave up her place on that bench to a new generation of moms, she had the expertise and repertoire for a comprehensive book on group quilts and was stitching her way toward a new career.

Her goal is to harmoniously integrate the "idea" of a kaleidoscope with the techniques and materials of quiltmaking. Becoming a kaleidoscope aficionado has made her more adaptable and creative, both artistically and intellectually. The notion that there is no absolute, correct, best selection, that her fabric choices today will be different from ones made tomorrow, is very liberating to her. After all, a breathtaking collision of color in a 'scope will maneuver into something different, something slightly new, during even the instant it takes her to hand it to you.
