Anna Maria Horner

Anna Maria Horner grew up in a home filled with her dad's paintings and her mom's handmade creations. Her grandmother from Greece sent hand-loomed wool blankets to warm their beds, while her Indiana grandmother's beautiful hand-knits kept Anna Maria and her siblings cozy. As a child in the 70s, Anna Maria preferred making Barbie dresses from her mom's fabric scraps over buying them from the store.
After earning an Honors Fine Arts Degree in Drawing from the University of Tennessee in 1995, Anna Maria opened Handmaiden, a retail project for clothing and housewares. She designed and produced her clothing line with her mom, and eventually, the label was sold in several stores across the Southeast.
For five years, Anna Maria enjoyed designing clothing, but she always explored various artistic mediums. She exhibited her paintings in galleries regularly, and her artwork is now part of numerous private and commercial collections.
Throughout her journey, Anna Maria's love for color has been a constant theme in all her work, whether in fashion, quilting, or fine art. Around 2001, she began turning her ideas from sketches into store-ready products, which led to the creation of her brand. Anna Maria's innovative approach and vision of surrounding herself with her own creations have resulted in collaborations with over two dozen manufacturers to design homewares, gift items, and textiles. Her focus on the craft, sewing, and quilting community, where her creativity began, has deepened over time. She has authored three sewing books and continues to self-publish sewing, quilting, and needlework patterns.
Teaching design, stitching, and patchwork has become an increasingly important part of Anna Maria's work.
Anna Maria is a mother of seven, and her creative endeavors have always been inspired by her family. As her children grow and leave the nest, she and the younger ones have recently moved from their longtime home in Nashville to a charming Greek Revival cottage in Historic Franklin. This new home includes plans for a dream home studio, blending her artistic vision with her new surroundings.
